Field Awareness - AKC Canine Health Foundation

As much as we love this sport and our dogs even more, it is important to see potential hazards in the fields we run our dogs in.

Please click the link below for an article featured on the AKC Canine Health Foundation web page about "Field Awareness."

Test 4 - Mid Test Evaluation

We are nearing the midway point of the Fourth Series. The anticipated rains have held off but you can feel the temperature is dropping by the hour.

This test continues to be a challenge with all the birds presenting their share of difficulty.

The flyer duck is shot in a field of heavy cover with cut strips.

The middle retired gun can be difficult if the dog runs the dam and continues up the hill. He can end up behind the gunners and hunting deep and wide right.

The line to the left retired has hay bales placed to deflect the dog from his line. Then they have a pond to angle through. Squaring out of the pond can put the dog back at the middle retired gun. A nice angle out and you are in the area. Avoiding the water can throw the dog far left and into a hunt pattern deep and wide of the mark.

These birds are well placed and the lines to them are scattered with challenges.

Series Four – Water Triple

Our temps today are at 41 degrees with a feels-like temp of 38 degrees. It is overcast and promises rain. Today we have a triple. The area is the Siren Field for those who know the area and is down the road from where the First Series was held.

The mat faces south and sits atop a mound. The wind is negligible but a light north northeast.
The test should take 6 minutes to complete, though the test dogs took a bit longer.
As you look out from the line, beginning from the left you will see a field dotted with hay bales and the pond lies beyond them.

The left hand three gunners are 275 yards out and at the base of the trees. They will fire twice and throw a rooster pheasant to the left. It will land in or near tall cover. They will retire into the trees when the dog is sent for the flyer.

The middle gun is two people that are 260 yards out and will throw a hen pheasant after two shots are fired. They will also retire.

The Flyer station on the right sits at the base of the power line towers The hen duck is shot left into thick cover.

The order of guns is left to right. The two controlled birds will retire when the dog leaves to pick up the flyer.
