2018 National Retriever Club Championship HATS FOR SALE

If any of you folks out there are interested in purchasing National Open caps, please email info@theretrievernews.com and let us know what color and how many. They are $15 each or 3 for $40 (plus $10 S&H).

Please provide your "COMPLETE" contact information, including email and phone number and after we return to Wisconsin, we will do our best to complete your hat purchase in the order in which it was received. Remember, all colors may not be available after the event ends.

**Weather Update**

The weather is holding for now, overcast and cloudy. Its 31 degrees and feels like its 22 degrees.
So it's another cold day here, and we aren't quite sure what to expect with rain, snow and ice all possible as we go into the afternoon. We will keep watching this for updates!





Series Seven is in the works!

Preparation for the 7th Series is underway! There is a little extra work involved with the overnight snowfall, but we should be up and running very soon! Current scenes from the 7th below ....

Gun Change - Update

Our first gun change of the day in the 5th Series (day 2) happened at 9:24 am. Dog #3 just finished her run. We will be starting back up with dog #5 "Babe" with handler Danny Farmer.

Test Dog "Phillie" with handler Erin O'Brien came to the line as the bye dog.

PRTA Annouces Recipient Clubs of Their Land Grants

The PRTA announced the recipients of their land grants.

They awarded a total of $18,000 to clubs.

Congratulations to the following clubs ...

  • Vikingland Retriever Club
  • Flat River Retriever Club
  • Willamette Valley Retriever Club
  • Oregon Retriever Trial Club
  • South Louisiana Retriever Club
  • Central Minnesota Retriever Club

Gun Change - Update

Our first gun change of the 5th Series happened at 2:33 pm. Dog #51 just finished his rerun. We will be starting back up with dog #62 Henry with handler Danny Farmer.

"Phillie" with handler Erin O'Brien was our bye dog.

We started Series Five about Noon today with dog # 34. We had 16 dogs complete this series in about 2.5 hours. The test is taking between 9 - 10 minutes per dog to complete. With 45 more dogs to compete this test, it will be another split test.

Here is what has been happening out in the field...

Handle: 35 - 41
Double Handle: 36 - 61
Pick Up: 46
No Bird / Rerun: 47 - 51

Let see what the rest of the day will bring for our next batch of dogs.

2018 the National of the Cold - What They Are Going Through!

There are many "watching" the 2018 National Retriever Championship via this blog and most are probably wishing they could be in Paducah Kentucky watching it live.

Well, this forecast may have you thinking otherwise...

Currently is feels like 21 degrees!


The rest of the day will barley make it above freezing!

New Test Dog - Series 4 – "Phillie"

"Peat," our female test dog has come into season, so starting on Day 4, Tuesday, November 13, we will have a new female test dog. AFC Moonstones Phillie Phanatic, "Phillie" will take over with owner / handler Erin O'Brien.

Weather Update

3:00 pm rain has started. The weather has begun to deteriorate with colder air moving in and the temperatures have dropped.

Qualified But Did Not Enter


The 2018 National Retriever Club had a total of 118 dogs qualify to compete in this year's Championship. The qualification year is between the end of last years event in Boston, GA (November 19, 2017) through November 4, 2018.

Having 106 dogs to enter the event, here is the list of the 12 dogs that qualified but did not enter. Great Job to all that qualified for the 2018 National Retriever Club Championship.
