Fifth Series - Split Test - End of Day - Review

Test dog "Phillie" was called to be the bye dog. The test came to an end today at 4:47 pm with the last running dog being #80 Gus.

The day started with finishing up Test 4. We moved to Test 5 - Land Quad and had the first running dog #34 at 12:00 pm. The first gun change happened around 2:30 pm after the rerun for dog #51.

29 dogs have completed Test 5 in about 4.75 hours.

Hot Topic of the day by far is the cold weather but more so the winter weather that is on its way.

Here is some stats on the 5th series...

Handle: 35 - 41 -50 - 64 - 66 - 76 - 77
Double Handle: 36 - 61
Pick Up: 46
No Bird / Rerun: 47 - 51

Middle Retired - Came in left of the blind then worked his way to the cover but missed the bird. Quickly came back in and got it.

Left Retired - Out to the bale by the cover and a quick left and Gus got his bird.

Right Retired - One turn just short of the bird then he was on it.

Middle Retired - Took a line left of the blind, turned right and came back to the bird but missed it. Went back into the cover then to the bird.

Left Retired - Out to the cover and straight in to get his bird.

Right Retired - Nitro had an excellent line out to just left of the bale and got his bird!

Flyer - Maddie made quick work of her flyer.

Middle Retired - She went down the back side of the middle retired guns and Maddie begins to hunt in the wrong strip. It becomes deeper when she got handled back to her bird.

Left Retired - Maddie comes in behind the gunners to begin a hunt pattern that takes her to the bird.

Right Retired - A good line to the long retired. A few passes at the end and back and forth and Maddie has her bird.

Flyer - Entered the field right of the bird. made a couple passes and reposition himself. Located bird and back in.

Left Retired - Great initial line to the bird. Broke down a little early but quickly corrected and on his bird.

Middle Retired - Taking a similar line he began to enter the area left of the retired guns. A handled and he was on it.

Right Retired - Running hard for the long retired gun, he quickly covers the ground with a little hunt left of the bird and a loop to the right. He located the bird and brought it back in.

Just In - Conditions Update - 5th Series

Dog #75 Jack just finished his 5th series around 4:00 pm and with the high clouds it is allowing the little more light through. It is causing shadows across the right side of the field. The winds are picking up and its cooling down.

Flyer - Good entry point into the corn field. A fairly controlled hunt and he found the bird.

Middle Retired - Good mark!

Left Retired - Started a loop a little short but Jack corrected himself and located the bird.

Right Retired - Nice work on this bird.

Flyer - Clooney entered the field a few steps away from his bird. He snapped up his bird and came back in.

Middle Retired - Numerous passes took Clooney deep but he worked his way back in for the bird.

Left Retired - Excellent line to the bird. A couple of loops and he got it!

Right Retired - He came into his mark a little left but Clooney worked it out and got his bird.

Updated Conditions - 5th Series

Work has continued much the same with each bird giving problems. The snow on the ground has melted but the hay bales are still covered in a dusting of white. As the dogs look out in the field after the gunners have retired, there is still a lot of white to distract their memories.

We continue to watch the forecast as it calls for 1/10" of ice and 3-5" of snow!

Middle Retired - Coming into the area very close to the gunners, Kenny shoots into the cover strip but can't find the bird. He checks out the next strip and comes back to pick up his bird.

Left Retired - No question on which strip holds this bird. He is out and back with the bird.

Right Retired - Started to hunt at a bale early but quickly went back to the correct area for the bird.

Middle Retired - Riot hunted right of the fall area then got deep right. Came back into the cover and missed the bird. Hunting to the left he came back into the cover and got it.

Left Retired - Came in under the arc of the throw, made a quick turn right to the bird.

Right Retired - He went down the right side and angled left then made a circle around the bale and got his bird.

Left Retired - Out just deep of the cover, she took one loop and went back into the cover for her bird.

Right Retired - She angled left across the field to the far tree line. One turn and she came back right to her bird.

PRTA Annouces Recipient Clubs of Their Land Grants

The PRTA announced the recipients of their land grants.

They awarded a total of $18,000 to clubs.

Gun Change - Update

Our first gun change of the 5th Series happened at 2:33 pm. Dog #51 just finished his rerun. We will be starting back up with dog #62 Henry with handler Danny Farmer.

"Phillie" with handler Erin O'Brien was our bye dog.

We started Series Five about Noon today with dog # 34. We had 16 dogs complete this series in about 2.5 hours. The test is taking between 9 - 10 minutes per dog to complete. With 45 more dogs to compete this test, it will be another split test.

Middle Retired - The handler selected this bird as his first bird, causing the guns to retire while the dog was approaching the area. A couple of loops and Tiger had the bird.

Left Retired - He came into the area behind the guns and started to hunt deep and left. A few passes and he came in with the bird.

Right Retired - A good bird for Tiger.

Flyer - A bit of a hunt in the corn, but he stayed in controlled and came in with the bird.

Middle Retired - Max entered the field in a good position but then over ran the mark. A hunt area covering multiple strips of cover but he found his bird.

Right Retired - He took a few loops at the end of the field and came back with his bird.

Flyer - Driver got out to the area and then got very wide right in back of the guns. He continued to hunt deep and right, then went deep and left. Driver got very deep but then worked his way back to the guns and along the line of cover and got his bird.

Left Retired - He went out to the bales, looped around them, then went into the cover for his bird.

Middle Retired - Straight out to the cover area he hunted through it and came out deep. Back into the cover, he missed the bird again and got way deep. He then worked his way back towards the guns but then got out deep left again. He had to be handled to bring him back to the area of the bird.

Right Retired - Got This Bird - Great Mark.

Right Retired - Down the right side of the field, Drifter got to the holding blind and worked her way to the bird.

Flyer - She got out to the area of the fall deep of the guns and hunted wide right and back deep again before turning to the left and getting her bird.

Right Retired - Gradually falling down the hillside, it took a couple of handles to bring her back to the bird.

Flyer - Long Flyer but good recover and Gator is back with his bird.

Middle Retired - Into the area with a couple of passes and back to the bird.

Left Retired - Out and back with the bird.

Right Retired - Very good mark.


Test Dog - 5th Series - AFC Bronx Bomber II, LM – “Yankee”

Yankee and owner / handler Jason Fleming came to the line at 11:50 am.

Flyer - Yankee got a long flyer that caused an extensive hunt.

Middle Retired - A tight hunt and found his bird.

Right Retired - Started to hunt short and had to be handled to the bird.

Left Retired - In under the arc of the throw, Yankee turned and got the bird.


There were two other test dogs that ran before Yankee, but the judges tweaked the test a bit and that required another test dog. Yankee was the only test dog for the Fifth Series that we have presented to you here.

Series Five - Land Quad

Test Five is a quad with three retired and a rooster flyer. The test is in a hay field dotted with almost 30 large snow covered bales. There are strips of sage grass cover that has been mowed into the field. The mat is at the north end of the field located on a hill side.

Bird #1 is the long Right Retired dead rooster station is against the far tree line at 315 yards from the mat. This bird is thrown to the left, landing in the area around a bale of hay.

Bird #2 is the Middle Retired station located at 130 yards in front of the mat. This well brushed set of bales is where the gunners retire after throwing a hen pheasant angled back slightly to the right.

Bird #3 is the Left Retired station located 185 yards from the line. The guns are also retired in hay bales. This hen pheasant is thrown on a deep angle back to the right landing in a strip of heavy cover.

Bird #4 is a rooster Flyer at 235 yards to the left of the line. The gunners shoot this rooster to the left.

Middle Right Retired – 130 yards

Left Retired – 185 yards

Flyer – 235 yards
